1 & 2: Installation views of 9 shades of Whiteley

Self-portraits & other intimacies

On show: 16 September – 19 November 1995

Portraits & other intimacies explores perhaps one of the most controversial aspects of the work of this significant Australian artist. Indeed amongst Whiteley's earliest paintings and drawings are self-portraits, which he continued to produce throughout his life. But as his career developed, these self-portraits became more than physical likenesses; they developed into presentations of Whiteley's persona and contrasting notions of how he perceived his own psyche.

The exhibition also includes portraits of Whiteley's intimates – through whom he saw reflections of himself – and of heroes onto whom he used to project an alter-ego.

The exhibition comprises of some 35 paintings and drawings, spanning three decades from 1955.
