1 & 2: Installation views of 9 shades of Whiteley

Rivers & rocks: Brett Whiteley & Arthur Boyd

On view: 20 October 2001 – 27 January 2002

The image of the river in all its physical and poetic manifestations has been an important theme in the work of both Brett Whiteley and Arthur Boyd.

Boyd's celebrated works on the subject range in mood from subdued awe amidst the natural splendours of the Shoalhaven to outrage at instances of environmental indifference.

In 1975, Whiteley stayed and worked with Boyd on the Shoalhaven. He would later spend much of his time in the central west of New South Wales, at Bathurst and Carcoar, Oberon on the Fish River and around Yass. For Whiteley, the meandering riverine environment presented the scene for relaxed observation that, at times, reflected darker aspect's of the artist's character.

This exhibition brings together two of the country's best known and most accomplished artist's, exploring a theme that is relevant to both metropolitan and regional Australia.

Rivers and rocks examines the riverine environment as a setting for poetic speculation, sensuous reverie and observed fact that will remain an enduring experience for a wide-ranging audience.
